There has been a silence in my blog because I've given myself up to having a holiday and staying away from the computer, although I've mostly been at home or nearby. I had to get away from Finland for a few days, though, and this time the destination was Crakow, Poland.
The Old Town of Crakow is beautiful and well preserved. The picture is taken at the Main Square (medieval market place). In the middle of it there is the old Cloth Hall. On the left, in the blue booth they are selling "precels", some kind of ring-shaped buns.
Krakovan vieressä sijaitsee Wieliczkan kaupunki. Siellä varhaiselta keskiajalta asti toiminut suolakaivos on Unescon maailmanperintölistalla. Siinäkin on portaita ihan riittämiin. Ylös pääsi onneksi hissillä.
Huikein nähtävyys kaivoksessa on Saint Kingan kappeli.
Next to Crakow there is a town called Wieliczka. The Wieliczka salt mine which has been functioning since the early Middle Ages is in Unesco's World Heritage Register. The mine is over 300 metres in its deepest but the tourist route "only" goes to the depth of 135 metres. I wouldn't require any more steps to walk down. I was glad there was a lift to take us back up.
The most amazing sight in the mine is the Saint Kinga Chapel. The walls are decorated with relieves showing scenes from the Bible, all carved in rock salt, and the chandeliers are made from salt, too.
In the mine there is a treatment centre 135 metres underground but we didn't have time to visit it. The salty water in the mine is said to relieve for example allergic symptoms, several kinds of inflammations and stress.
The most shocking thing was the trip to Oswiecim, to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, the greatest disgrace to humanity. A horrible place, I don't feel like writing about it.
Kuvassa on Birkenaun leiriin johtanut rautatie.

In the picture there is the railway leading to the Birkenau camp. The huge majority of those who entered this gate never came back alive.
On the whole I'm satisfied with the trip to Crakow but it's a pity it was so short. Luckily we did have time for shopping, too. Most of that time we spent at Galeria Krakowska which is a huge mall with 270 shops. You could buy there for example the famous Polish bear Mis Uszatek and his friends.
